Despite the huge diversity of needs, the evaluation of the sustainability of an agricultural system always takes into account three dimensions: economy, ecology and social. 

The goal is to produce sufficient, affordable, quality food (feed and fibre) and simultaneously maintain the capacity to produce over time, provide economic viability of farming, contribute to the well-being of local communities and protect environment and biodiversity.
